How to Resolve “VCRUNTIME140.dll is missing” on Windows 10/11
The VCRUNTIME140.dll missing error appears when an application needs the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime to start, but the matching library is missing, outdated or corrupted on your PC.
.dll files from random file-sharing websites. Always install the official Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package.Step 1: Install the official Visual C++ Redistributables
Download both the x86 and x64 packages for Visual Studio 2015-2022 from Microsoft’s official download page (search for “Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads” on learn.microsoft.com). Install both, even on 64-bit Windows, because 32-bit programs need the x86 package:
- x64 architecture:
VC_redist.x64.exe - x86 architecture:
VC_redist.x86.exe
Step 2: Repair an existing installation
If the packages are already installed, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, select Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64 and x86 separately), choose Modify, then click Repair. Restart Windows afterwards and launch the program again.
Why not regsvr32? Runtime libraries such as VCRUNTIME140.dll are not COM components, so registering them with regsvr32 does not fix this error. Repairing or reinstalling the official package does.
Step 3: Run DISM and System File Checker
Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run these commands one after the other to repair corrupted Windows dependencies:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannowStill seeing error 0xc000007b?
That error usually points to an x86/x64 mismatch. Installing both redistributables from Step 1 and restarting normally resolves it. If the problem is limited to one program, reinstall that program after the runtime is in place.
