Fixing Windows Update Error Code 0x80070002

Error 0x80070002 occurs when Windows Update cannot find or open expected installation files in its cache folder.

Reset the Windows Update components

Open PowerShell or Command Prompt as Administrator and run the following. The commands stop the update services, rename the update cache so Windows rebuilds it, and start the services again:

net stop wuauserv

net stop bits

ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

net start wuauserv

net start bits

Then check for updates again

Restart your PC, open Settings → Windows Update and click Check for updates. Windows creates a fresh SoftwareDistribution folder automatically. Once updates install successfully you can delete the SoftwareDistribution.old folder to free disk space.

If the error persists

Run the repair sequence from our SFC & DISM guide, and make sure your system date, time and time zone are correct.
